FAQ

Q: How do I select the right wattage for my coverage area?

A:  The amount of wattage you select for your coverage area for flowering/full cycle usage is going to be based on its ability to generate average PPFD values exceeding 1000 µmol/m²s.  For a 4' x 4' to a 5' x 5' area based on a higher efficiency of at least 2.5 µmol/J, 800 watts will be enough even for CO2 enriched areas.  These lights are designed to provide the optimum coverage and evenness of light spread at 12-18" of operating height above canopy.

Our lights also come equipped with dimmersIf you dim your fixture, you will increase it's efficiencyThis will lead to more photosynthetic energy for the plants and less heat output.

For vegetative growth only, PPFD needs are about half that of flowering (500 µmol/m²s) which means you will need half as much wattage as you would for full cycle/flowering use.

Q: Do I need a separate light for veg and a separate light for flowering/bloom?

ANo, our lights are built for full cycle usage, meaning you need only one light for seed/clone/seedling to harvestWe use LEDs which output a very bright, natural white light and offer color temperatures designed to mimic those of natural sunlight. Our Samsung EVO LEDs use a 437 nM photon pump to generate a spectral distribution similar to that of sunlight.

All lights come with a dimmer so that you can adjust both the power output as well as height above canopy for the different growth cycles.   Our lights feature the addition of OSRAM 660 nM deep red and 730 nM far red (IR) LEDs.

Q: What is your warranty?

AWe offer a (5) five-year warranty on all components Overnight service available for replacement parts.

QHow high above the plants should I hang my Highgrove light?

A: Our Magnolia lights all come equipped with dimmers allowing you to adjust the light output and coverage area to suit your individual grow environmentHighgrove grow lights can be used close to the canopyMost growers operate the lights at 12-18" above the plants.

QWhere are your fixtures made?

A: Our grow lights are engineered and built in California by lighting professionalsHighgrove Lighting uses top-of-the-line components sourced domestically whenever possible.

QCan I safely operate your lights in a wet/damp environment?

A: Our grow lights are designed for safer operation in both wet and damp environmentsAll Magnolia and Cypress LED boards have a waterproof conformal coating rendering them safe for foliar spraying and humid/light water sprayHighgrove Lighting uses IP65 electrical connections with screw-together barrel connectors for safe and easy setup and operation.

Q: Why LED vs HPS?

A: LEDs compete with traditional HPS and Metal Halide HID lighting sources in several ways, including greater energy efficiency, longer lifetime, and smaller size. They, however, are more expensive.

LEDs operate at a much lower temperature so there are fewer cooling requirements (energy, noisy a/c, and fans) – also because they put out less radiant heat, they can be positioned closer to the plant canopyThe ability to configure LEDs also helps to increase their usability over HPS, which traditionally must be positioned higher – and directly above – the canopyLEDs can be placed in different configurations above the canopy to suit many different-sized growing areas.

Dimmers enable the grower to power up, or down, depending on the stage of growth, DLI requirements, and growing spaceThere are no costly bulbs nor reflector replacements required with LED grow lightsPlug them in and start to grow.

Q: What makes the Cypress EVO bar lights different?

A: The  World's First Hinged and Bendable Grow Light designed to get light physically closer to the leaf chloroplasts and deliver high PPF output in the most direct manner.  The PAR map is very even over both a 4x4 and 5x5 area, with strong PPFD output owing to it's 2.9µmol/J overall efficiency.  Using Samsung EVO LEDs revolutionary in their use of a 437 nM photon pump to align closely with the chlorophyll-A absorption curve and increased green spectral energy output.  16 lbs and flexible for use alone or in pairs, these innovative bar lights create an actual canopy of light.

Q: Why is cooling important with LED Grow Lights - how can I make my lights perform better?

A: We use a passively cooled design featuring copper heat spreading technology that manages safe and even operating temperatures without the aid of forced air induction by fansMaintaining airflow across the fins of the heat sinks aids in dissipating the maximum amount of heat as it speeds up the interchange of hot and cool air. We highly recommend using a clip-on oscillating fan or other such fan to maintain a slow steady airflow across the heat sinks as this has been shown to lower the heat sink ambient temperature and will also aid in increasing our light's efficiency, and PAR output.

Q: What is the importance of a well-engineered heatsink?

A: Heat is the main enemy of LEDsInsufficient cooling can lead to diminished brightness and premature product failureDesigned specifically for LEDs, these heat sinks maintain a Tj (thermal junction) temperature well below that recommended by the LED manufacturersThese specially engineered fin heat sinks are anodized single-piece extruded aluminum, increasing the heat dissipation effectivity. Fin designs help to provide more surface area for better coolingThe addition of copper plating aids in heat exchange between the board and heatsink as well as promotes evenness of heat spread to maintain lower overall LED operating temperatures and remove damaging hotspots.

Q: Can I remote mount my drivers?

A: Yes - all lights are available with remote mount driver extensions (10 ft.) for remote driver placement outside of the grow space to lower overall environmental and luminaire temperatures.

Q: Do you ship discreetly?

A: Yes - all lights are shipped in plain brown boxes with no reference to 'grow lights'Our return address simply says 'Highgrove' on the label.
